Cold night, damp. One-bar heater.
I huddle over a cup of jasmine tea,
Warm my hands around it.
My breath steams. Toes are numb.
The Bakerloo train sparks by,
Scattering my reflection in the cup.
Mice tumble among discarded poems
in the grinning wastebasket.

London, 1973
