Skirted in the air,
      helium-filled balloons,
  colored outlines-

The happy heads
      turn dark-
          like bobble-headed ghosts

Singing on strings, stretching their heads
    against a steel-scented wind-

    Their owner looks up proudly-
        at his shy, dark-faced children-

He has not sold a single one
since June,

Not a singlepenny to save
his soul

one day his
helium head
will
  e x p l o d e,
in the hot wind.
